Users' responses to contoured wheelchair handrims.

چکیده
The responses of 28 spinal cord injured wheelchair users who tested a contoured handrim design were analyzed. Paraplegics, who had stronger grip strength, preferred the contoured design compared with their own handrims in 10 of 12 circumstances of use, as well as according to overall assessment. Most indicated they would pay the estimated additional cost to produce the test shape, which is designed for increasing the contact between hand and rim. Quadriplegics, with weaker and more viable grips, gave mixed responses. This opinion study illustrates some of the problems encountered in evaluation of a new equipment for disabled persons.

Investigation of the performance of an ergonomic handrim as a pain-relieving intervention for manual wheelchair users.
Manual wheelchair users commonly experience pain in their hands and wrists associated with the repetitive stress of propulsion. The objective of this research was to examine the effect of an ergonomic wheelchair handrim as an intervention designed to reduce pain in the hands and wrists and improve functional outcomes for manual wheelchair users. Three studies were conducted to achieve this obje...
متن کاملComprehensive Needs Assessment Study and Deployment of QFD Targeted at New Wheelchair Design
Objectives: Extensive use of wheelchair increases caregiver dependency, risk of bedsores, risk of injury during transfer, and so on, and it effectively decreases quality of life, safety, and comfort of the people with disability. Therefore, improving the design of wheelchairs is highly essential in promoting the quality of life and level of participation among people with disability. The design...
متن کاملTrunk and Shoulder Kinematic and Kinetic and Electromyographic Adaptations to Slope Increase during Motorized Treadmill Propulsion among Manual Wheelchair Users with a Spinal Cord Injury
The main objective was to quantify the effects of five different slopes on trunk and shoulder kinematics as well as shoulder kinetic and muscular demands during manual wheelchair (MWC) propulsion on a motorized treadmill. Eighteen participants with spinal cord injury propelled their MWC at a self-selected constant speed on a motorized treadmill set at different slopes (0°, 2.7°, 3.6°, 4.8°, and...
متن کاملThe effects of backrest thickness on the shoulder muscle load during wheelchair propulsion
[Purpose] This study investigated the optimal thickness of the wheelchair backrest for lumbar load and increased comfort. [Subjects] Fifteen healthy people participated. [Methods] The study examined three randomized backrest conditions: no pad; a 3-cm-thick lumbar pad; and a 6-cm-thick lumbar pad. The location of the lumbar pad was standardized at the mid-lumbar level (L3). Participants were in...
متن کاملLife-cycle analysis of depot versus rehabilitation manual wheelchairs.
The proper selection of a wheelchair requires making several critical decisions, not the least of which is what type of wheelchair is appropriate. The International Organization for Standards (ISO) continues to develop and refine wheelchair standards. Standards allow the objective comparison of products from various sources, permitting consumers or clinicians to assess wheelchairs with which th...
